ATU Admissions Office has tried to make the admission process as simple as possible. Please read the following instructions and follow the steps to apply for education in ATU.

How to Apply

Allameh Tabataba'i University's application process is online; there is an online application form you need to submit. You can also contact the Admissions Office through any of the following email addresses:


Once you contact the above email addresses, you will receive the application form. Please fill in the form carefully and make sure you have attached all necessary documents. In case any part of your application is incomplete, your admission process will be suspended until the Admissions Office receives your complete documents. Please keep in mind that before filling out the application form, you have to clearly decide on your level of study (e.g. BA, MA, PhD) and your major, programme or course (e.g. Law, Political Sciences, Economics, Persian Language and Literature, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, etc.).

After completing the application form, ATU's Admissions Office will review it and will evaluate each applicant. Early decision will be made by at least 2 months after receiving the application. Each application then goes through the following stages:

  1. Authenticity and validity of provided information and documents will be checked and the provided information will be evaluated according to university's regulations.
  2. Scientific competence of the applicants will be evaluated by ATU Vice-Presidency for Education and the relevant departments, and the result will be announced to ATU Directorate for International Academic Cooperation.
  3. Institutes providing scholarship to foreign students (just in case) will be informed of confirmation or rejection of the applicants. Those applicants who afford the costs of their education will be informed by ATU Directorate for International Academic Cooperation.

When to Apply

Every year, application process starts on 1 April and continues to 10 March. Each academic year in ATU, as in most Iranian universities, is composed of two terms: the first term starts in mid-September (1st of Iranian Mehr month) and the other in late January (1st of Iranian Bahman month) .

Justifiable Applications

To be recognised eligible, each applicant has to:

  1. have non-Iranian nationality (provision of a valid passport is compulsory for proving the applicants' nationality);
  2. have the prerequisite degree certificate for entering the next level which will be proved by Iran's MSRT;
  3. sit and pass courses in Persian Language in ATU International Centre for Persian Language and Iranian Studies (CPLIS) or in other centres for Persian Language learning; applicants for all three levels of education, including bachelor's, master's, and PhD programmes have to pass this stage;
  4. have a confirmation letter certifying his/her scholarship from Iran's MSRT, Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, or other organs and institutions inside or outside Iran provoding such scholarships.

Important Note

Please bear in mind that in the colleges where instruction is given in any language other than Persian, students have to provide a document showing their proficiency in that language. At the same time, all applicants, as stated above, need to sit and pass Persian Language courses. Students who have not been successful in getting a scholarship and can afford their educational charges themselves will be evaluated regarding the validity of their educational degrees. In case of any sort of inconsistency, the student's admission process will be stopped.   1. Bachelor's candidates must have a high school diploma, pre-university degree, or its equivalent, with a minimum average mark of 14, or its equivalent according to Table A below.
  2. For master's degree applicants, the minimum acceptable average mark of their bachelor's degree certificates is 14 or its equivalent according to Table A below.
  3. For PhD candidates, the minimum acceptable average mark of their master's degree certificates is 15 or its equivalent according to Table A below.
  4. PhD candidates must also present a language proficiency certificate in one of the English Language Proficiency Tests specified in Table B; the certificate which have expired shall not be accepted.

Résumé or CV is a representation of your background and skills. This document is one of the most important parts of your application process. Please make sure that your résumé is clear, up-to-date, and accurate. All sections of your résumé have to be prepared with great care, and you will be responsible for the accuracy of all data in this document. ATU Admissions Office recommends that your résumé includes the following sections:

  • Personal and Contact Information: Please include your name, gender, nationality, telephone/mobile number, complete postal address, email address, fax no., etc.
  • Education: Including your previous education; beginning and ending year of each mentioned academic period; thesis title for thesis-based degrees; GPA of each academic period; attended seminars or workshops; etc.
  • Work Experiences:Here you will elaborate on your previous employment experiences. This section includes the places you have worked, titles/positions you have held, a short description of responsibilities and duties, your employment dates for each job, etc.
  • Important Note: Our first and foremost priority is those jobs which have relevance to your academic background or your intended academic programmes in the future.

  • Publications: Published scholarly articles, contributions in scientific/academic publications, conference papers, books, etc.
  • Language Qualifications: Your level of proficiency (beginner, intermediate, advanced, native, etc.) in any language you have; please specify the name and mark of any official language test you have taken.
  • Skills: This section covers the following skill sets and abilities:
    • Computer-related skills (e.g.: hardware, software, programming, etc.);
    • Industry-specific skills;
    • Soft skills (e.g.: teamwork, leadership).
  • Accomplishments Section:This section includes:
    • Awards and honours;
    • Scholarships;
    • Memberships in student and professional organizations;
    • Volunteer work;
    • Activities and interests.

Motivation Letter

This letter is an important document in your application. Motivation letter helps the Admissions Committee members to become acquainted with you, your abilities, your present and future goals, and your experiences. In this letter, you have the opportunity to explain the reason(s) you chose ATU as your future academic destination and convince the authorities that you are one of the most qualified among many other applicants. Although your own unique style of writing is of utmost importance, certain points are prepared by ATU Admissions Office, so that you can write a more accurate and efficient letter.


Motivation letters' content is vital to the admission procedure; therefore, try to invest a good deal of time on it. Please make sure to include enough information about the following points. Below there are a number of points to observe in your letter.

  • State the level/degree and your major of interest clearly;
  • Clearly explain the reason(s) behind your interest in that specific field. Please elaborate on the aspects of that major or programme which are important to you and motivate you to pursue your studies in that major.
  • Mention your future goals and explain how those purposes can be achieved by studying that specific major and through studying in ATU.
  • Explain the reasons why you should be accepted in ATU.Try to convince the Admissions Committee members by referring to your skills and abilities. Making requests or appeals only serves to weaken your status as an applicant with potentials.
Organization and Format of the Letter:

It is highly recommended to carefully observe the organization of the content of your letter because a great content written in a disorganized manner cannot carry much of an impact.

  • Avoid unclear and ambiguous statements. Make sure your ideas are clearly explained. Please ensure that your statements do not contradict with each other.
  • Pay attention to the division of ideas and paragraphs. Avoid fragmenting an idea by putting it in different paragraphs.
Neatness and Order:

Not only does a motivation letter reflect your future aims, it also represents your personality as a student or scholar.

  • Avoid handwriting. Neatness is highly recommended in your letter.
  • Proofread your letter once or twice and make sure you have not made any spelling or grammatical mistake.
  • Make sure that the quality of your document is sufficient and the content is as clear as possible.

Recommendation Letters

A letter of recommendation highlights your academic and/or professional achievements. A well-written letter gives ATU Admissions Committee detailed information about who you are and how professional you are will be in the future. Letters of recommendation are significant parts of your application process. Please bear in mind that if you are an MA or PhD candidate, letters of recommendation must be written by two of your references/professors. Bachelor's candidates need to provide only one recommendation letter. Please provide complete personal and contact information of the person or persons you have introduced as your references.
